Start speaking with

Contrary to popular belief, engaging in your first German conversation with a native speaker may not be the best approach. The initial attempt at speaking a foreign language can be daunting, and this experience is often intensified when the conversation partner is a native speaker. Native speakers, accustomed to conversing with other fluent speakers, might not have the patience or understanding needed for beginners. In contrast, fellow German learners, who have gone through similar learning challenges, tend to be more empathetic, patient, and willing to communicate at a slower pace, facilitating a more supportive learning environment.
I recommend starting with five 1-hour conversations with fellow German learners before gradually introducing native speakers into your practice. This strategy is key to building the confidence necessary for effective communication. Confidence enhances your ability to speak more loudly and clearly, making it easier for others to understand you, which, in turn, boosts your confidence further. Ensuring your first language exchange is positive is crucial, and here are some qualities to look for in an ideal language partner:
Your language partner should be:
- Better at speaking German than you.
- Patience, allowing you to fully express your thoughts and sentences.
- Committed to using German throughout your conversations.
- Engaged by asking questions to stimulate dialogue.
Your language partner should not:
- Correct you excessively.
While it may seem counterintuitive, constant correction is not the most effective method for improving language skills. Language acquisition research suggests:
- Listening to proficient speakers (such as parents, peers, teachers) is a primary way we improve our native language skills over time.
- Parental corrections often involve extending our early attempts at speech in a constructive and playful manner, thereby fostering a positive association with the language.
Unfortunately, learning German as a second language presents unique challenges, not least of which is that adult learners are not afforded the same patience as children learning their first language. Despite this, it's possible to find suitable tutors or language exchange partners who have experienced learning German as a second language.

Learn to listen
Listening is an incredibly powerful skill that you should diligently develop. Traditional German learning methods emphasize reading, which initially feels rewarding. When listening to someone, you're inherently not in control; you cannot dictate the speed of speech, eliminate background noise, or frequently ask for parts to be repeated. This is why initially, learners might find comfort in reading and inadvertently overlook listening – a critical error.
Consider how you acquired your native language. It’s unlikely that reading was your first skill.
Research on first language acquisition and general observations reveal that understanding basic words and engaging with them through speech precedes reading and writing by several years. We typically have a substantial language base before we learn to read. The natural progression from listening to speaking, then reading, and finally writing is evident, although it’s important to note the significant interplay between these skills. When learning German as a foreign language, it’s beneficial to emulate this process, starting with enhancing your listening abilities, followed by speaking, and only then focusing on reading and writing once a solid foundation has been established.

Don't analyse grammar
