HOW TO LEARN GERMAN FAST?

  1. Forget what you've been taught
  2. Make learning German easy
  3. Start speaking with the right person
  4. Learn to listen
  5. Don't analyse grammar
  6. Don't memorize vocabulary

Forget what you've been taught

Many believe mastering German is tough, especially through conventional means involving textbooks and rigid instructors. This method typically involves over 200 hours dedicated to vocabulary and grammar without significantly advancing conversational skills. Classroom simulations often leave learners unprepared for real interactions, leading to feelings of inadequacy when faced with actual conversations.

I, Danny, have experienced the frustration of language learning firsthand. At 22, I volunteered in Mexico, tasked initially with teaching computers in a region plagued by power outages and a lack of resources. This led to an unexpected role as an English teacher, despite my struggle to communicate effectively in English or Spanish after extensive schooling. This challenge highlighted the limitations of traditional language education, which often focuses more on academic achievement than practical communication skills.

However, my journey took a positive turn when I discovered a revolutionary method for learning languages. This approach dramatically improved my proficiency in Spanish in just three weeks and enhanced my English communication skills through immersive experiences. Inspired by this success, I devoted my life to refining this method, resulting in the creation of the Deutsch Deluxe program. This innovative strategy offers learners an unparalleled opportunity to accelerate their language acquisition and achieve fluency with confidence.

Make learning German easy

Let's explore how to simplify the process of learning German. A key concept to grasp is "cognitive load," which refers to the amount of information your brain can handle at once. Consider multitasking: walking and speaking English simultaneously is usually manageable. However, try rereading this paragraph aloud while counting every second word silently...

Challenging, right? This difficulty arises from a significant increase in cognitive load, possibly pushing you to cognitive overload. This often occurs when adopting traditional methods to learn German, such as:

  • Using textbooks.
  • Relying on traditional German teaching methods.
  • Memorizing vocabulary.
  • Studying grammar rules.

This traditional approach forces learners into an unnatural pattern of communication in German:

  • Thinking first in their native language.
  • Translating each word mentally.
  • Improvising with remembered grammar rules.
  • Attempting to pronounce the constructed sentence.

This method may seem standard due to its prevalence in educational systems, where language learning is disconnected from real-life usage, focusing on memorization and grammar rather than practical application. However, this does not mirror how language is naturally used, where everything is interconnected and grammar is often intuitive.

Embrace Change:
Learn German through Yoda-Codes.

Yoda-Codes offer a novel approach, presenting translations that maintain the original grammatical structure, thus ensuring a more direct understanding of sentence construction and vocabulary in context. Here are three examples of how Yoda-Codes can change your learning experience, presented as complete phrases or sentences that respect the grammar and use direct vocabulary translations.

yoda code yoda code yoda code

By consistently learning with Yoda-Codes through sentences, dialogues, videos, songs, and movies, these structures will become second nature, shaping your German linguistic identity. This method simplifies the transition to conversing in German by:

  • Encouraging you to think in "Yoda-coded" native language structures.
  • Easing the translation process in your mind.
  • Enabling you to articulate well-structured sentences effortlessly.

This approach significantly reduces cognitive load, aligning with the brain's natural pattern-recognition capabilities. Utilize this strategy to make learning German more accessible and efficient.

The Deutsch Deluxe method is designed to optimize your brain's learning capacity, offering a smoother and quicker path to improving your German skills.

Start speaking with
the right person

Contrary to popular belief, engaging in your first German conversation with a native speaker may not be the best approach. The initial attempt at speaking a foreign language can be daunting, and this experience is often intensified when the conversation partner is a native speaker. Native speakers, accustomed to conversing with other fluent speakers, might not have the patience or understanding needed for beginners. In contrast, fellow German learners, who have gone through similar learning challenges, tend to be more empathetic, patient, and willing to communicate at a slower pace, facilitating a more supportive learning environment.

I recommend starting with five 1-hour conversations with fellow German learners before gradually introducing native speakers into your practice. This strategy is key to building the confidence necessary for effective communication. Confidence enhances your ability to speak more loudly and clearly, making it easier for others to understand you, which, in turn, boosts your confidence further. Ensuring your first language exchange is positive is crucial, and here are some qualities to look for in an ideal language partner:

Your language partner should be:

  • Better at speaking German than you.
  • Patience, allowing you to fully express your thoughts and sentences.
  • Committed to using German throughout your conversations.
  • Engaged by asking questions to stimulate dialogue.

Your language partner should not:

  • Correct you excessively.

While it may seem counterintuitive, constant correction is not the most effective method for improving language skills. Language acquisition research suggests:

  1. Listening to proficient speakers (such as parents, peers, teachers) is a primary way we improve our native language skills over time.
  2. Parental corrections often involve extending our early attempts at speech in a constructive and playful manner, thereby fostering a positive association with the language.

Unfortunately, learning German as a second language presents unique challenges, not least of which is that adult learners are not afforded the same patience as children learning their first language. Despite this, it's possible to find suitable tutors or language exchange partners who have experienced learning German as a second language.

The Deutsch Deluxe method is designed to build your confidence in speaking German to such an extent that your first conversation will feel effortless.

Learn to listen

Listening is an incredibly powerful skill that you should diligently develop. Traditional German learning methods emphasize reading, which initially feels rewarding. Unlike a person speaking, written text doesn’t hurry you, become impatient, or suffer from background noise interference. However, listening is a skill that is less forgiving. When listening to someone, you're inherently not in control; you cannot dictate the speed of speech, eliminate background noise, or frequently ask for parts to be repeated. This is why initially, learners might find comfort in reading and inadvertently overlook listening – a critical error.

Consider how you acquired your native language. It’s unlikely that reading was your first skill.

Research on first language acquisition and general observations reveal that understanding basic words and engaging with them through speech precedes reading and writing by several years. We typically have a substantial language base before we learn to read. The natural progression from listening to speaking, then reading, and finally writing is evident, although it’s important to note the significant interplay between these skills. When learning German as a foreign language, it’s beneficial to emulate this process, starting with enhancing your listening abilities, followed by speaking, and only then focusing on reading and writing once a solid foundation has been established.

Fortunately, the Deutsch Deluxe program is designed to support you through each of these stages, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Don't analyse grammar

Grammar analysis is a significant time drain in language learning, and here's why:

  1. Fluent speech doesn't accommodate time for grammar contemplation, nor does active listening.
  2. Communication's aim is to convey meaning. Focusing too much on structure can severely hamper fluency.
  3. Analyzing grammar during conversation requires meta-communication, necessitating its own vocabulary set.
  4. Grammar concepts are not always straightforward. For instance, German's language particles don't fit neatly into word classes, making them a challenging aspect to define.
  5. Grammar rules evolve. Traditional rules like not ending a sentence with a preposition are often disregarded in practice. Language usage can redefine grammar over time.

Learning German through grammatical analysis can be especially daunting. German grammar is often cited as a primary difficulty by learners. A notable example of its complexity is the concept of declensions (Deklinationen), which can perplex even native speakers. The process for foreign learners involves understanding:

  • Five word classes requiring modifications at the end of the word.
  • Four grammatical cases.
  • Memorization of over 200 verbs and prepositions to determine cases.
  • Identification of definite or indefinite articles.
  • Recognition of one of the four genders, which often lacks logical consistency.

Mathematically, guessing correctly has a 1 in 32 chance—hardly encouraging odds.

Tests with native German speakers often reveal a lack of explicit knowledge of these rules, suggesting a more intuitive grasp of the language. Interestingly, some natives substitute one case for another, possibly leading to a reduction in the number of cases used. This example underscores the impracticality of focusing on grammar when learning German traditionally.

Consider how seldom you think about grammar in your native language while speaking. If it's rarely or never, then it's time to adopt a new method - the Deutsch Deluxe approach, which prioritizes effective communication over grammatical perfection.

Don't memorize vocabulary

Memorizing vocabulary ranks as the second greatest time sink in traditional German learning, following closely behind grammar analysis. The conventional method places undue emphasis on rote learning of vocabulary lists. While modern tools like flashcards and language learning apps incorporate spaced repetition, recognized for its effectiveness in learning isolated facts or words, this approach misses the holistic aspect of language learning. Language acquisition is a comprehensive process that involves understanding the interrelations among words and the unique flow and rhythm of each language. Memorizing vocabulary in isolation or, worse, trying to remember isolated words, often acts as a barrier rather than a help.

The essence of language learning lies in understanding how words affect one another within sentences, leading to an appreciation of the language's melody. This critical insight often gets lost in traditional vocabulary memorization methods. Instead, engaging with language through context and exposure, as seen with Yoda-Codes, can significantly enhance language acquisition. Polyglots and language experts alike tout exposure as the paramount strategy for learning a new language. Utilizing Yoda-Codes not only increases your exposure but also enriches your understanding of the language in a more natural and effective way.
